Start a Senior Services Business
By Eric Hammer
Senior citizens are a big business; and with the baby boomer
generation now retiring, starting a senior services business
is a great idea if you want to make a solid living. So just what
is a senior services business? Basically, it's a company specializes
in providing all kinds of services that older people may need,
such as home health aides, drivers to help seniors get to places
they otherwise wouldn't be able to go, light housework, you name
it.
Unfortunately, it's a fact that as people age they become
less and less able to take care of themselves and they become
more dependent on others. However, in our hyper competitive society,
children often don't have the time or the wherewithal to take
care of their parents. Therefore, for those who don't want to
go into a nursing home, a senior services business provides the
perfect opportunity to purchase whatever services are needed
to help these older American remain independent.
How Much Can You Make?
It's difficult to quantify how much you can make since this
is a business and not a job. How much you'll earn will depend
entirely on your own initiative and your own efforts to get your
business off the ground.

| Tips
Keep in mind that this is a service business. While you will
rarely need to provide services yourself (you'll subcontract
the work out to people who go to homes and actually provide the
services), you will need to deal with people all day. You'll
be working with customers, both the senior citizens and their
children who will be arranging the services that are needed.
Therefore, you should be good at solving people's problems and
listening to them and to their needs.
Those interested in working with senior citizens but who don't
want to start a senior services business should also consider
starting up a nursing home or assisted living center where seniors
live in the building full time and get varying levels of services
depending on what their particular needs happen to be.
Qualifications / Requirements
There are no formal requirements to start a senior services
business, however you should familiarize yourself with the needs
of senior citizens and what kinds of problems you are likely
to encounter on a day to day basis while running your new business
venture.
First Steps
Start by reading more about senior services and what kinds
of services are generally offered by a senior services business.
An excellent book on the subject can be found in the resources
below. Then, consider whether to start an independent business
or work with a franchise. While starting an independent business
can often be done more cheaply, a franchise may help you with
support systems to make building your new business easier.
