How to Make More Money
From Your Business
By Steve Gillman
Of course it can be a good idea to copy success, and you've
heard such advice before. But have you actually tried to do this
systematically in your business? Have you looked carefully at
what your successful competitors are doing and then applied what
you learned to your own business? It can be a great way to boost
revenues and profits.
When we were first building and promoting our websites, I
looked for other sites to exchange links with in order to increase
traffic and get better positioning in the search engines. But
it took so much time. I would spend hours surfing the internet
to find relevant websites, and then looking for the contact information
so I could send an email to the owners to ask if they were interested
in exchanging links. Sometimes a day's work would result in nothing--not
a single response.
One day I found a "link request letter" online and
the writer said it worked very well for him. He also was allowing
anyone to copy and use it. To be honest, I thought it sounded
hokey (for lack of a better word), but I decided to give it a
try. I added my name and the name of my sites, but otherwise
used it word-for-word. The results? At least double or triple
the success I had previously.
That example also points out how you can copy just the successful
parts of a business. Even a business that is failing might be
great at something, whether that is getting good employees, making
a great product or finding new customers. Look for anyone in
your industry who is doing better in any way than you are, and
find out why.
There isn't much more to say about this strategy, and how
you use it will depend on what kind of business you have. Essentially
you just need to get in the habit of asking, "What are similar
businesses doing that works?" It is something you should
ask repeatedly. There is nothing wrong with brainstorming your
own ideas, but why not also use ideas that have already been
proven to work for others? Copy success--it is often the fastest
way to make more money from your business.
